A Life In The Service Of Sound Reproduction

At a very young age, Jean-Claude Tornior was attracted by the new technological events surrounding high fidelity reproduction of music. At the time he did not think about making that his profession. His parents steered him in the direction of physical chemistry but he also studied low frequency electronics. He made his first tube amplifier at the age of 16. It was based on transformers from Millerioux. He also built his own loudspeakers and discovered the magic a high-end speaker could bring.

A decisive moment in his life was his encounter with Joseph LEON, the founder of ELIPSON. Fascinated by the work of this man and especially by his prophetic vision of sound reproduction, Jean-Claude moved to Paris. After a difficult start he succeeded meeting the famous researcher and he was able to get an interview. This resulted in a 10 year career (1967-1977) with Elipson in which Jean-Claude received an exceptional training in the 'art and science of sound' and where he worked close to the master, Joseph Léon.

Joseph Léon withdrew himself from Elipson in 1976 and Jean-Claude Tornior founded his own PHONOPHONE corporation in 1977. He developed, under his own label, speakers based on an elaborate loading system, based on spatial resonance. He was also the first person to think of the tweeter as the key to the psychological perception of listening and therefore he placed it at the centre of the loudspeaker.
His work also drove him in the direction of transmission line speakers as a means to reproduce the bass and he recognized the strong influence of this system on the midrange He reinstated the floating baffle with its ability of totally balancing the pressures in the loudspeaker and eliminating the effect on the cabinet which in turn allows for a perfect reproduction of the signal.

He also adapted the work started by J-S Léon on the interference caused by the proximity of the speakers. This resulted in a "Star system". For the reproduction of the bass in a floating baffle construction, he placed 6 speakers in a crown shape according to measurements defined by J-S Léon. This ensured homogenous transmission and directionality to avoid short circuit acoustics. It was the first time that real bass was reproduced in a floating baffle with a 'togetherness' due to a large diameter.

Jean-Claude Tornior also developed a line of electronics in which one he realized his own ideas on the rationalization of mass cables and floating mass circuits that are insensitive to the quality of the current feeding them. In 1983, he was the first one in France to adhere to the concept of the CD and to develop a high-end CD-reader based on Philips technology, namely the Discamp3 Phonophone.

In 1986, he was asked by E. Pastor and P. Vercher to help set up Sound Magazine which was later to become Sound & Video Magazine. In his reviews and tests he was able to let his knowledge of audio equipment and sound reproduction benefit an entire readership and in that he helped to bring audio technology to a larger audience.

From 1989 to 1991 he worked with the Japanese Matsushita group on brands such as Panasonic and Technics.

In 1992, he rejoins his friend Georges Chèrière, who at that time had created the magazine "Répertoire des Disques Compacts" or Compact Disc Review, in order to start a column on sound reproduction. This column was a big success, mainly due to his honest style. It was in this column that Tornior Jean-Claude started his first essays on cables. He was forced stop writing because of the fact that the advertisers were becoming increasingly uncomfortable with his independent style and his choice of components for review.

At the beginning of 1994, he became an editor in chief for the German group Michael Brieden and started the magazine Hi-fi-Plus. Later that became Hi-Fi Multimedia which in spite of excellent results suffered from bad financial management.

By now it was April 1995 and Jean-Claude Tornior started HI-FI Cables & Company. After numerous tests he had noted a big difference between different cables and their applicability in different situations. He continued to generate sufficient interest in this matter, but without the support from the established but mostly conservative Hi-Fi stores, he was not able to effectively supply the demand. He then decided to start a store entirely dedicated to cables. Here people can come for advise and take their choice of cables back home for thorough evaluation in their own systems before they make a purchase. Hi-Fi Cables was born.
